In today's fast-paced world, home security has become the top priority for homeowners. With technological advancements in the past few years, sophisticated surveillance systems with hassle-free integration have become possible. One such product that has gained popularity is the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell. This doorbell camera comes packed with advanced features comparable to its pricier counterparts.

The Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell stands out among the affordable smart doorbells with its impressive specifications and user-friendly features. Capturing clear video at 1536x1536 resolution, it offers HDR and SIP video call capabilities upon doorbell press, alongside a 180-degree diagonal lens field of view and high-powered night vision. The motion detection sensor of this Arlo Video Doorbell covers a 110-degree horizontal range, while full-duplex two-way audio and quick reply messages enhance visitor interaction.

    Key Features

Let's look at the key features of the Arlo video doorbell camera and see how it stands out from other video doorbells.

    Video Quality

The Arlo Wired Video Doorbell captures video at a maximum resolution of 1536x1536, allowing for detailed and clear picture. The doorbell supports multiple video modes, including 1536x1536, 1080x1080, and 720x720 pixels, all in a 1:1 aspect ratio. This allows you to choose the video quality that best suits your needs and network bandwidth. It boasts a High Dynamic Range (HDR) which enhances video quality by balancing exposure levels in challenging lighting conditions.

The wired Arlo video doorbell also supports SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) video calls when the doorbell is pressed. This enables you to have real-time video conversations with visitors at your door. The doorbell offers a wide field of view with a 180-degree diagonal angle. This allows you to capture a larger area in your front door, providing a comprehensive view of your surroundings.

    Color Night Vision

Unlike most wireless video doorbells, this wired Arlo doorbell doesn't have color night vision. Instead, it features high-powered Infrared (IR) LEDs operating at a wavelength of 850nm. These LEDs, combined with an IR cut filter, enable clear night vision capabilities, allowing you to see and monitor your doorstep even in low-light or no-light conditions.

    Motion Detection

The Arlo Essential Video Doorbell is equipped with a single motion sensor that has a 110-degree horizontal detection angle. This means that the motion sensor can sense movement within a 110-degree area in front of the doorbell. When someone enters this detection zone and triggers the motion sensor, the doorbell can take action, such as sending alerts to your connected devices or initiating video recording.

An Arlo Secure Plan further enhances the motion detection of your video doorbell. With Object Detection, the doorbell can distinguish between different types of objects, such as people, packages, vehicles, and animals. By recognizing these specific types of objects, the system can provide you with more specific and accurate notifications about the detected activity.

    Two-Way Audio

Like most video doorbells, the Arlo wired video doorbell is equipped with a single microphone array that captures sound and audio from the area in front of the doorbell. Additionally, it supports full-duplex two-way audio, allowing you to both listen to and speak with whoever is at your doorstep.

When someone presses the Arlo smart doorbells or triggers motion detection, you'll receive an alert on your connected devices. You can then access the live video feed from the doorbell and engage in a real-time conversation with the visitor. This can be particularly useful for interacting with delivery personnel, visitors, or anyone else who approaches your door. And if you're unable to answer the door in real time, the doorbell allows your guests to leave pre-recorded messages. This feature is particularly useful when you're away from home or occupied and can't engage in a live conversation.

    Free Cloud Storage

Arlo devices, including doorbell cameras and security camera models, come with a complimentary 7-day rolling cloud recording that allows you to store recorded video clips in the cloud for later access and review. After the free trial period ends, you have the option to purchase an Arlo Secure subscription for continued access to cloud recording and additional features.

If you choose not to subscribe to an Arlo service plan after the trial ends, you can opt for local storage via an Arlo Base Station or SmartHub. If your camera and the base station or SmartHub are on, and your internet goes down, the camera will keep saving recordings to the USB device.

    Weather-Resistant

Like other smart doorbells, the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell is built to withstand various weather conditions, including exposure to rain, snow, and other environmental factors. This weather resistance ensures that the doorbell can continue to operate reliably and capture video footage even in challenging weather conditions, providing you with security and convenience year-round. However, it's important to note that while the doorbell is weather-resistant, it should not be submerged in water or exposed to extreme conditions that are beyond its specified operating temperature range. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for installation and usage to ensure the doorbell's longevity and performance.

    Smart Notifications

Arlo Smart Notifications use advanced AI technology to send alerts when important motion is detected while filtering out common movements like swaying tree branches. This feature offers reliable security and ensures that you receive a push notification for significant events captured by your camera. Please note that access to Smart Notifications requires an Arlo subscription plan.

You can personalize the types of motion alerts you receive using the Arlo Secure App with these options:

    1. Person Detection: This function delivers real-time alerts when individuals approach your residence and allows you to search your recorded videos for clips featuring people.

    2. Package Detection: When Package Detection is enabled, your Arlo camera generates detailed notifications when it detects package deliveries or pickups, even for small packages like shoeboxes.

    3. Animal and Vehicle Detection: Vehicle Detection identifies various vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, and bicycles, sending alerts when your camera spots them. Animal Detection notifies you of animals larger than small rodents.

    4. Smoke/CO Alarm Detection: When your Arlo camera detects the sound of a smoke and/or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm, it alerts you in the Arlo Secure App and records until the activity stops or for a specified duration.

    Arlo App

    4. Two-Way Audio: Many Arlo cameras support two-way audio communication, allowing users to listen to audio from the camera's location and speak through the camera's built-in microphone and speaker. This feature enables users to interact with visitors or deter potential intruders.

    5. Customizable Activity Zones: Users can define specific areas within the camera's field of view as activity zones. This customization helps reduce false alerts by focusing on specific regions of interest.

    Installation Process

The Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell can be installed with or without an existing doorbell wiring or chime box.

With an Existing Doorbell or Chime

Before you start, ensure that you've turned off the power at the breaker and have all the necessary items listed above. Install the Arlo Power Kit included in the package.

The Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell is designed to replace your existing wired doorbell. It needs to be connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

    Installation Steps:

    1. Remove your current doorbell from the wall.

    2. Disconnect the existing electrical wiring from the doorbell, making sure they don't slip into the wall. You can temporarily tape the doorbell wires to the wall to prevent this.

    3. Install your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell, either with or without the mounting wedge provided in the package. The mounting wedge helps you adjust the angle of the doorbell based on your doorbell's position and the pathway to your door.

    4. Turn the power back on at the breaker.

    5. Verify that the LED on the front of your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell is white.

    6. If the LED is solid amber, check that your doorbell transformer supplies the correct voltage (16-24VAC). If not, you might need to activate bypass mode on the Arlo Power Kit.

    7. If the LED is off, it may be booting up. Wait for up to a minute before troubleshooting. If the LED remains unlit after a minute, the doorbell is not receiving power. Turn off the power at the breaker and double-check the wiring.

    8. If the LED alternates between amber and white, it could be due to low operating temperature or voltage. Allow up to 13 minutes for the doorbell to warm up.

    9. Launch the Arlo Secure App and follow the provided installation instructions to connect the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

Without an Existing Doorbell or Chime

      • To skip the "How many wires do you see connected?" screen, select "Two."

      • To skip the "What are your chime terminals labeled as?" screen, select "Front, Trans, Rear."

      • Swipe left through the next several screens until you see "Replace chime cover" and tap "Continue" to skip these steps.

    4. While keeping the Arlo Secure App open, follow these remaining steps to install the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell:

    Installation Steps:

    b. Install your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell, with or without the provided mounting wedge.

    c. Plug the AC power adapter into a wall outlet or turn on the power at the breaker.

    d. Verify that the LED ring on the front of your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell is solid white.

    • If the LEDs are solid amber, your plug-in AC transformer may not be supplying 16-24V AC.

    • If the LEDs are off, your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell may be booting up. Wait for a few minutes to confirm.

    • If the LEDs are flashing amber, it means the temperature or battery is too low, and the device needs some time to power up.

    e. Follow the Arlo Secure App instructions to connect your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

At the end of the installation process, select "None" as the Traditional Chime option to avoid any damage to your plug-in AC power adapter.
